Will you be my used car salesman?


I was talking to my therapist today about how I’ve been disappointed recently with some people in my life. Several people have either said or done things that were not what I was expecting from friends – they let me down. I have been feeling sad, frustrated and sometimes angry.

I’m sad because I feel like I need to cut my losses with a couple people in my life because of their actions, so I’m ending a relationship.  Grieve and replace.

I feel angry because I think they violated a “boundary” or expectation I have around how friends behave.

That’s where I got my lesson in used cars.

People often mistake being friendly with being friends,” my therapist pointed out to me. “That’s particularly challenging when someone like yourself is rebuilding friendships and relearning what it takes to be a friend and to have friends.” He then proceeded to describe a used car salesman — friendly as can be, “has your best interest at heart,” is willing to “go to any length” to get you the best deal.  He asks me about my dogs, my family, my birthday, my favorite coffee at Starbucks.  But, as my therapist points out, “you know he and the sales manager are figuring out how much they can get out of you.” And, do I ever hear from the guy again?  Nope…unless I need a new car.

I can see this pattern even in how I perceive people to be around me in recovery. I go to 12 step meetings and everyone is friendly, supportive, helpful. I start to think (and I know I do!) – wow, everyone in here is my new-found friend – bringing with that certain expectations about how friends interact.  It’s a pattern in how I relate to people at work, or as far back as my “Christian cult days” in Ann Arbor, MI.  I have such a deep void right now in my life as I rebuild and relearn who I am, that I’m anxious to connect and make friends. Then when these “new-found friends” lash out at me, or don’t respond to a request for assistance with a project, or don’t include me in social events I get sad, frustrated and angry.

But have they really violated a boundary or reasonable expectation?  Or, am I perceiving our level of “friendship” as more than it really is – and therefore having unrealistic expectations?  This doesn’t question their sincerity or authenticity in the rooms – or in business, or wherever I might run into friendliness and misinterpret it for friends. Perhaps the used car salesman analogy falls apart here — my apologies to any used car salesmen for the stereotype 🙂  I do believe the folks around me are helpful, friendly, supportive and nice. But, that a friend does not make – perhaps, so I’m being told. And since I do trust my therapist, I’m staying open-minded, willing to take this as a lesson in life and a lesson in my recovery as an addict.

What are my expectations of certain individuals?

And how do I grow in my understanding and ability to discern between acquaintances, friends and confidants?

As my sponsor would encourage me, start with some definitions!  So, I’ll end here – grab my dictionary (or wikipedia!)- and cuddle up with my dogs for some unconditional love. Because with them, there are no unrealistic expectations — it’s unconditional love 24 hours a day.  That and eat, sleep, poop.  Not a bad life 😉

Best friend (or the closest friend): A person with whom someone shares extremely strong interpersonal ties with as a friend.

BFF (“best friend forever”): Slang used primarily in the USA by teenage and young adult women to describe a girl friend or close best friend.

Buddy: In the USA, males and sometimes females often refer to each other as “buddies”, for example, introducing a male friend as their “buddy”, or a circle of male friends as “buddies”. Buddies are also acquaintances that you have during certain events. The term may also refer to an online contact, such as the AOL Buddy List.

Casual relationship or “friends with benefits”: A sexual or near-sexual and emotional relationship between two people who don’t expect or demand to share a formal romantic relationship. This is also referred to an open relationship or a “hook-up”.

Family friend: A friendship extended to family members of the friends. Close relation is developed in those societies where family setup is strong. This term usually used in subcontinent.

Comrade: Means “ally”, “friend”, or “colleague” in a military or political connotation. This is the feeling of affinity that draws people together in time of war or when people have a mutual enemy or even a common goal. Friendship can be mistaken for comradeship.

FUNK: Talking, Discovering, Resolving. What Am I Waiting For?


I’m in a funk. And, it’s bugging me because I don’t like being in a funk. And I don’t know why.

Part of me says, “just allow myself to feel and be in the funk. I’m powerless over my feelings. I can’t control them.” I’ve been told to just apply the 12 steps to my feelings, and find acceptance. Find serenity in the things I can not change.

But, then I struggle with another tool my therapist has helped me with — using feelings to get in touch with what’s going on — using my feelings to identify what events led to my feelings in order to resolve the initial event with healthy actions.

EVENT —>   THOUGHTS (interpretations) —> EMOTIONS —> ACTIONS

For example, when I’m sad, it’s because there is a loss, or the ending of something. The unhealthy reaction I’m used to is to numb the feeling, or to replace the loss with something so I don’t have to feel the sadness. The healthier action is to grieve, to let go. Once I’ve lived through that sadness and grief, then I can replace. “Grieve and replace” instead of just “replace.”

EVENT —>   THOUGHTS (interpretations) —> EMOTIONS —> ACTIONS

Loss or ending in a relationship—————————–> SAD ———>  Grieve and Replace

But that tool is not helping me so far because I haven’t figured out what’s going on.

Or maybe I know why, and I just don’t want to dig there. Because I still don’t trust my emotions.

 

Then there’s this other angle on being in a funk: the only thing we can control is how we react to situations. Well, I can’t change my feelings. I feel funky and sad — and I don’t know why, and I don’t know what to do with it. And I’m not able to just turn it off and say, “good morning – I choose to be happy today.”

And that bugs me.

And confuses me.

I’m struggling.

I’m not using.  I’m not running from it.  Though, I guess I am ignoring it — not digging into the feelings and letting them clue me into what is going on. I am checking out – sleeping – isolating.

And what I realize is I don’t process well. I don’t talk to anyone regularly about what’s going on in my day – never did, and probably haven’t for so long because I’ve been alone or on my own. I have also managed to keep people away – avoiding intimate friendships or relationships. But, I know when I do talk about events, situations in my day, I am able to see (or be helped to see) what’s going on, and how I’m feeling. If I don’t get it off my chest or diffuse it or learn to resolve the initial event with healthy action, then it festers, grows out of proportion and becomes a mountain.

So here I am again.

Realizing I’m alone – by choice – and that wall gets me to the same place every time I bang my head against it.

Nothing changes if nothing changes.

So is it that the tool isn’t helping me…or I’m choosing not to use the tool?

Choosing not to trust my emotions – or to fear them – even though I have data (experience) that they do lead me to an authentic understanding of myself. In fact, they help me discover my true self.

So what am I waiting for?

Is the glass half full, or half empty?


This is a running joke between me and a very dear friend of mine. I, the eternal optimist, see the glass half full; he the realist (not pessimist! as he points out) sees the glass half empty. We love to tease each other about our different perspectives on life, people, circumstances.

This came to mind recently as I’ve been wrestling with my expectations of other people and situations. As you can imagine, the wrestling comes from being disappointed, sad and frustrated when they aren’t met. I’ve been told that as an addict, it’s important not to have expectations – because they can lead to disappointments and resentments, which are recipes for relapse.

But as I’ve chewed on this and brought it up as a topic in meetings and with my therapist, I have questioned: “Is this really how I want to go through life?  Not having expectations?”  Sounds awfully dull.  Sounds a lot like seeing the glass as half empty!  I’m not ready to make that switch!

Honest – yes.  Open minded – eh…  Willing – not so much.

I’ve been here before.  It’s time to revisit my world view…again.

Without being cliché, what I’m realizing is it’s about accepting things they way they are, not the way I want them to be.  Accepting that people in my life — even friends with 10 and 20 years of recovery — as broken human beings in need of compassion and grace, not judgement and rejection. It’s about living in the moment, and trusting my Higher Power to take care of me. My expectations are about control – and I have to accept that I am powerless over people, places and things. It doesn’t mean I accept injustice, bigotry, discrimination, etc. But, most of the situations in my life recently that frustrate and disappoint me don’t fall into that category.

So is the glass half full, or half empty?

That’s not the right question.  In fact, there is no question.

It’s a glass of sweet nectar – the sweet nectar of life!  Drink deeply and enjoy the refreshing gift.
